Physical Security: How it pertains to Access of Restricted Areas (Tool Rooms). By SPC David S. Davidson Physical security is more often thought of as armed guards, guard dogs vehicle barriers and the like. But on a military post, there are all sorts of restricted areas such as Arms CBRN and Supply rooms. Another is the Tool room in the Aviation Support Battalion. This tool room must be secured at all times. How is access restricted to it accomplished? First there is the door lock with only a few keys. Second is the Key control program. But most important of all is the Access roster. The access roster allows the unit commander to designate certain personnel to have unrestricted access to it. These personnel work in it on a daily basis. The tool room personnel allow certain users of the tool room to sign out tools. This is done with a tool sign out log and an authorized user’s memorandum from each unit the tool room supports. Being properly authorized allows personnel to accomplish their tasking’s for a set amount of time for specific times of the day or workweek. Access can be denied at any time. The tools that are stored in a tool room are of significant importance to the unit’s mission and must be accounted for at all times. They are usually of high dollar value. If a unit didn’t have proper accountability of its tools, bad things can happen. Tools can come up missing and be found as FOD on aircraft. This is a serious danger to flight. This is why proper access is necessary in a Tool room or other restricted area. It prevents theft and loss of high dollar value items such as NVG’s, Weapons, or tools. Also if items come up missing the personnel on the access roster can be held accountable for the loss of said item if found culpable.
