Interpersonal Communication Paper Interpersonal communication is absolutely dependent upon the relationship between people. Human Communication defines interpersonal relationships “as associations between two people who are interdependent, who use some consistent patterns of interaction, and who have interacted for an extended period of time” (Pearson, Nelson, Titworth, Harter, p. 6). An interdependent relationship must be mutually beneficial and supportive, while being collectively detailed and goal oriented. Interdependent relationships thrive when individuals learn to communicate well through verbal and nonverbal cues such as listening, speaking, demonstrating and expressing support, and providing feedback. The key to successful and meaningful interpersonal relationships is open, honest, and effective communication. This level of communication is achieved through consideration, diligence, dedication, and respect. Poor interpersonal communication can create a major obstacle in an organizational situation with significant ramifications. A common mistake made in relationships is becoming apathetic in communication. Individuals tend to take advantage of one another in lengthy relationships and typically display an uninterested or unconcerned attitude toward each other. While this behavior is mostly unintentional, this behavior and its verbal and nonverbal actions may severely and irreversibly damage a relationship. Extra effort is necessary to mend a broken relationship and a profound amount of time is essential to establishing a new and working level of dependency, respect, and trust. Relationships and the people who compose them are too often taken for granted and deemed replaceable rather than unique.
