TDA 3.1 Communication and professional relationships with children, young adults and adults. 1.1 Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults as it increases and maintains the positive attitude with all involved. When we first meet someone, whether it be a hello, wave or smile, communication has started and we have already begun to build a relationship. Positive communication is important in all aspects of life and if it isn’t grasped at an early age then it could lead to various difficulties in terms of interacting with other people. Communication is vital in building that positive relationship needed for trust and respect, something that is very much needed when working with children, young adults and their parents. It is also important that we model positive and effective communication skills when we are asking pupils to think about how themselves are communicating. If we do not communicate effectively how we expect young adults and children the message is mixed and they find it hard to understand what is acceptable and how we should communicate with each other. 1.2 As Teaching Assistants we need to build effective relationships in order to do our job well. there are several generic principles that underpin building a strong relationship with children, young people and adults: Effective communication - one of the most important aspects of building a relationship is finding a way to communicate effectively. If we think our relationship with the child, young person or adult isn’t as good as it could be we should adapt our style. It might be we need to show more facial expressions, speak more simply or praise more. Remaining positive and acknowledging a child in particular shows we enjoy being with them and in turn makes them more comfortable in your company. Showing respect - showing
