Unit 8: Promote Communication in Health, Social or Children’s and Young People’s Settings Task 1: Understand why effective communication is important in the work setting 1. (1.1) There are numerous reasons for people to communicate and these include: • Establishing a relationship • Maintaining a relationship • Small talk • Giving and receiving information and instructions • Giving and receiving acknowledgment, reassurance, encouragement and support • Expressing needs and feelings • Expressing and negotiating ideas, thoughts, opinions and concerns • Asking questions 2. (1.2) Positive working relationships with adults lead to a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere in the working environment. This is beneficial not only to the adults, but also to the children/young people, because the Foster Carer’s working environment is the child’s home, play and learning space. When positive relationships are formed, it is easier for colleagues and parents to give and receive trust, information, support, help, advice and encouragement. This makes it more likely that any problems between adults will be positively approached and resolved. It’s also more likely that skills and knowledge will be shared. As a Foster Carer communication is an extremely important part of the role, whether it is with the children, partner, birth family, other Foster Carer’s, Social Workers, School Staff and other professionals and agencies. Good communication skills allow you to establish and maintain relationships with all of the aforementioned people and this is an essential part of Foster Caring. There is also a lot of information in relation to the child in your care that needs to be received or communicated on to the relevant people. This may be done verbally, electronically or on paper. This information needs to be shared appropriately and given clearly so that it is properly understood.
