QUESTION 1a: Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. As teaching assistants, in order to communicate effectively, we need to be very clear in what we say. Children, young people and adults need us to communicate what is expected of them so they learn the boundaries of professional relationships and children can learn to communicate effectively themselves. Maintaining a relationship with someone is very important also as it keeps you in contact with others. It keeps you in touch with the feelings and needs of others, which is essential in any functional relationship. This is very important when working with children as you need to be informed as to their needs, in order to have a happy work environment. Again, I believe this leads back to the issue of trust. If children can approach you with a problem (without hesitation) then I would class this as a good relationship.

This can lead to the child gaining the ability to communicate with others. They may be able to learn sign language or develop the use of PECS to a better degree that will enable them to get their needs met more effectively. In the longer term this can reduce anxiety levels and behaviours because they are able to make themselves understood more easily. It is also important for me to have a good relationship with other people too. We all have the child’s best interests at heart and want to do our best to give that child the best opportunities available to them.
