The summer is replaces with shorter and frequent break. Year round school has been a controversy for many decades. Many parents do not agree to year round school because they find it difficult finding child care. One side argues that year round school is absurd. The other side claims that year round school is essential for some, since student often forget a lot during the summer break.
Not all students can be committed to completing summer homework. I also think that summer homework is not beneficial for the teacher because the teacher has to take time out of her lesson plan to let the students complete their summer homework, because she feels bad giving the student a bad grade at the beginning of the school year. Remember the summer homework is half of your first semester grade so if you mess up on summer reading and get a bad grade or no grade you're screwed. With that being said, I think summer
The first pro of having all year round school is the fact that the traditional school calendar is out of date. When public schools were first set up the United States was still mainly agriculturally based. Most of the students when the public schools were first set up lived on a farm and helped the parents around the farm. The school system acknowledged that and so they set up a 2.5 to 3 month summer vacation for students to help around the farm because that is the optimal time when farming is at its peak. And in today’s society, as much as we like a summer break that is two and half to three months long, isn’t really needed.
Over breaks you tend to forget what you learned before the break. No matter how short the break is, you still forget key ideas on what you learned. With three fairly long breaks in the middle of the year, most of the education time would be spent catching up and reviewing old work rather than learning new school concepts. In conclusion, you would be less educated with shorter breaks throughout the year. One reason we should have one large summer breaks is that students and teachers look forward to having some nice long time off for themselves.
I believe that the twelve month school year should be implemented in Monmouth County because of these following reasons. The Author of Say 'No' to Year-round Schooling claims that a twelve month school year would deprive students of their "well earned" freedom, deny students who wish to work during the regular school year the chance to do so, make it impossible for families to have beneficial getaways, result in teachers working in hot classrooms, result in teachers doing even more amounts of work without getting paid more and result in teachers being unable to have vacations with their own families, and result in teachers having to hire sitters to care for their children. The author believes these things because of her assumptions that the twelve month school year will have less vacation time, the teachers will not be paid more, and that the schools air conditioners will not be are conditioned. Year-long schooling will bring a fuller education and students will be less likely to be exposed to negative influences, and be less likely to become victims of crimes. The author says that since the students will be exhausted from attending school from fall to spring, students will not be able to accomplish much over the summer.
When at school, many students long for summer vacation. But with two hundred and sixty one days of school, breaks are what they fall back on to last them until the final escape--summer. Christmas break is the best out of all breaks. Christmas break is the best because it is the longest. Being two weeks, it is easier to travel with friends or family and enjoy vacation without having to worry about its shortness.
The year-round education plan is becoming very popular in schools today. The schedule is reconstructed so summer vacation is eliminated, and shorter, more frequent breaks are inserted instead. The typical single-track calendar operates on a forty-five to fifteen day plan, where forty-five days are spent in the classroom, followed by a fifteen day break. All school districts should replace their traditional school calendar with this new plan because year-round schooling increases the students’ maintenance of knowledge, improves his or her behavior, and offers flexibility while being effective. One major benefit of year-round schooling is the students’ retention rates are increased.
Year-round education could have a part to play. Proponents of year-round education argue that the key to success in school is continuous learning. They also argue that the traditional calendar works against efficient learning by sending students and teachers to months of school without significant breaks and sets students back significantly during a 60-70 day summer vacation. On the other hand, having a longer summer vacation is a tradition that is firmly entrenched in many communities. Is there really solid evidence to show that moving from a traditional calendar to a year-round calendar increases student achievement?
I have been thinking of it as me having no money. That has limited me in solutions because the root problem was not correctly defined. This has impacted me by limiting my efforts of forming a solution. With spending time in school in my mind I seem to have tricked myself into not understanding why I do not have in money or source of income. In the military I was paid for schooling and having spent the past ten years in the service I just automatically assume that I should have money.
Incentive is nearly impossible. For some students summer reading gives them something to do because they cant go out for some circumstances. For many, even myself included, this assignment is not interesting. It is a complete waste of time. One of the reasons I think its not beneficial is because we have 9 months of school where we learn and read or anything else and only 2 months of summer vacations where we have fun and do whatever we want.
