Persuasive Essay Should we have school all year round? By Megan Greenberg Many people have wondered about the learning schedule of kids. An idea was brought up of having three shorter breaks throughout the year rather than one long summer break. I’m a student of Salisbury middle school and sister of a school teacher, and I think year round school is a very bad idea. Over breaks you tend to forget what you learned before the break.
One sibling might be enjoying his or her two month break while the other has to sit in class working. Being in school during the summer makes it difficult for them to learn knowing their siblings are on vacation. Moreover, family vacations are very difficult to schedule, and complicates their plans. Most families take vacations during the summer. Most parents take advantage of their son or daughter two month off to spend time with them, such as going on family vacation, doing summer activities, and everything else associated with summer activity.
It actually refers to a reallocation of students over the year. Under a 180-day year-round school year, students work within a system in which the time off for vacations and holidays is more equitably distributed. There are shorter breaks between semesters or terms. Some schools prefer the 45 days on and 15 days off plan while others look to other models. These include a 60-day on and 20 off and 90 days in class and 30 days out.
Summer homework for students has become a controversial issue and the subject of myriad books, articles, and commentaries. Although teachers believe in the benefits of academic work assigned for the summer, research conducted on its merits would seem to indicate that the benefits are questionable. Summer reading is given to students every year. It is an assignment handed out which is to be completed by the time school starts next year. It is compiled of a list of books in which one must be chosen and read.
They say that all year round school is horrible because it takes away summer vacation – that it takes away time for long vacations. There are three main pros of having an all year round school. The traditional style is out of date, during the summer parents don’t know what to do with their kids and the knowledge loss is decreased and the third is vacations. Even though the list of cons is longer than the list of pros of having an all year round school calendar I believe that the short list of pros should be the reason that we leave the traditional school calendar in the past. The first pro of having all year round school is the fact that the traditional school calendar is out of date.
If the grad exams are not passed by 12th grade you will not graduate until you pass. If you do not pass the exam you will not graduate. By the 12th grade you should only have to take two classes a day that is only if you did not fail any classes. After second or third lunch wave you should be gone, that is usually around 12:30pm or 1:00pm. Leaving early was the best thing about being a senior.
Little did I know that every class I ditched, my high school would lose approximately $17.40 according to the article “is it time to ditch Senior Year?” by Hsu, Caroline. (2). High schools should ban Senior ditch days. It would save schools a lot of money. Therefore, the school can provide more activities and supplies which would help the students
When at school, many students long for summer vacation. But with two hundred and sixty one days of school, breaks are what they fall back on to last them until the final escape--summer. Christmas break is the best out of all breaks. Christmas break is the best because it is the longest. Being two weeks, it is easier to travel with friends or family and enjoy vacation without having to worry about its shortness.
Stress can cause illnesses in later life, for example, heart disease, hair loss, whitening of hair and cancer. Though this may not be directly connected to middle school students it will still have an impact to them in life. Homework is also a main cause of stress for high schoolers. Stress from working too long, stress from anxiously hoping to get a good grade. Studies have shown that homework for elementary – high school should not have homework but work on some special project or reading at home after school for only a satin amount of time depending on what grade the student is in like forty minutes to two hours a day after school.
It is inevitable to think that during this economy recession a four days school week could be a cost saving measure; however, it is a big mistake to take away one day of school since it will affects parents, child, staff and the country in many different ways. Gregory A Shmidt’s essay, “We Like the Four-Day Week”, explains how the switch to a four days schedule could be beneficial for the staff, students and budget savings. But, he didn’t mention how that system will affect parents’ pockets. U.S.A Today editorial board questions how reducing one day of school will be a saving if parents will be spending more on day care “what about the family cost of day care for a child home alone on a weekday?” (307). In fact, parents regularly work five days a week leaving their kids in school for those days.
