Understanding the Teaching Role and Responsibilities in Education and Training

Teachers make the education of their pupils their first concern, and are accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in work and conduct (DoE, 2011). Teachers are to act with honesty and integrity, having strong knowledge of their taught subject, keeping their knowledge and skills as teachers up-to-date and are to be self-critical (DoE, 2011). To forge positive professional relationships with students’ parents and other teaching staff and work with best interests of their pupils (DoE, 2011). There are many roles of the teacher, the main three are, managing the group, managing activities and managing the learning (Harrison, Killan, 2007). One of the main roles as a teacher is to motivate the students and develop their ability and ambition to learn new skills (Zeuger, 2000). This includes inspiring the learner to understand how to take responsibilities for their own development. This may be achieved by inspiring the learner to change and develop their own personal, social and professional skills (Harrison Killan, 2007). A teachers responsibility within the education setting is to act as a role model, be fair and consistent in all aspects of the teaching role and having a high expectation of all the students (DoE, 2011). Having a real passion for teaching in particularly in the subject being taught will help influence the student’s attitudes in the classroom (Hooley, et al, 2015). This is then important to understand the impact that this will have on the learner’s life, further development and possibly vocation. Another important role in teaching is interacting with students, by being the leader in the classroom whilst earning respect of the learner by setting a positive attitude and showing mutual respect for the students (Harrison Killan, 2007).
