How to move from dependent to interdependent I chose to do my book review assignment on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This book was first published in 1989 and since then, it has sold more than 25 million copies in over 38 languages. Stephen R. Covey did a fantastic job in writing this book. He explains in debt what a person should do in their personal life as well as professional life in order to solve problems with a principle centered approach. Just by following these seven simple tasks or habits as Covey explains them, a person will be able to overcome any problem that he/she is faced with. Once a person reads this book and thoroughly understand it, these habits are not arguable. Covey’s habits 1 through 3 are character habits that enable us to move from dependency to independency. Habits 4-7 are the outward expressions of character in the relationship with other people which guide us to move from independency to interdependency. This book is guidance to developing the core set values in everyday life to the point where it is easy for us to solve problems and make a solution in order to become a more effective person. The first habit that Covey explains in his book is to be proactive. Like Covey explains in the very beginning of this chapter of the book, proactivity is fairly common in management literature. Even though proactivity is fairly common, it is not found in most dictionaries. Covey defines being proactive as “It means more than merely taking initiative. It means that as human beings, we are responsible for our own lives.” Proactive people are people that take the worst of a situation and turn it around and make the best of the situation. Avoid being reactive and looking at the negative side of any situation. One of my favorite parts of this chapter is when Covey explains the difference between being proactive and reactive. Many
