7 Habits of Highly Effective People The book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey is book that I picked because I once saw it at a bookstore and was interested since it was on a display of best sellers. I decided to read it for my Marketing 1 presentation because it is a motivational book that helps people and guides them through personal and/or professional problems. I believe it can guide me and teach how to change or improve my habits in order to be the most effective person possible. The first habit, Be Proactive. It explains how life does not just happen. Whether we choose or not, it is carefully, consciously or unconsciously designed by us. We are the creators of our life. We make our own choices; therefore, we choose happiness or sadness. We choose success or failure. Through self-awareness, which is an ability possessed only by humans, we can identify the areas in which much energy is expended and to change them in order to be more proactive. Being proactive is taking responsibility for our own life. We cannot blame our shortcomings in life on our genetics, circumstances, or conditions. Proactive people recognize that they are “response-able” which means they have the ability to respond in a positive and effective manner. Reactive people, on the other hand, react instead of responding. Their physical environment affects them. If the weather is good, they feel good. If the weather is bad, they feel bad. They blame or praise the weather on their attitude and performance. A proactive person uses proactive language like, I can, I will, I am going to, I prefer. A reactive person, on the other hand, uses reactive language like, I can’t, I have to, if only. The second habit, Begin With the End in Mind. In other words, having a clear vision of where you desire to be and what are you going to do in order to get there.
