The State Police in Oklahoma humiliated an Army General Gerald for two hours and his son because they were African American. They were told to get out of their car and they were handcuffed without the police having a reason to. The police also asked if they can search Gerald’s car and Gerald said no. The police didn’t respect what Gerald had said and they searched his car anyway. The police brought drug-sniffing dogs since they were African American they expected them to have drugs in the car.
If police officers did not act with integrity, good morals, and good ethical decision making tactics then the general public would not trust them. If there is no trust for police officers with the general public this country would have mass chaos. People would not feel safe in their homes because the people (police officers) that are supposed to serve and protect them are dishonest and untrustworthy. Without police officers and other members of the criminal justice field having integrity our country would be like a third world country with all types of pandemonium, anarchy, disorder, and confusion going on. In conclusion, integrity plays a major role in our criminal justice system especially in the jobs of police officers.
Above the Law Police officers are given the authority to uphold the law and to maintain peace. They risk their lives every day and will have to use the rules of engagement to determine the threat level of violence towards them or society. They are able to use excessive force towards people who are violent and unable to comply. But in some scenarios, officers who think they’re above the law, abuse this rule and that’s when police brutality take place. Officers use brutality for the wrong reasons such as being racist or discriminating the individual.
The police can protect us, right? Wrong! Police arrive after the fact. Police can't tell when and where the next shooting will be. And they certainly cant teleport to where the shooting is taking place.
This means that lynching has stopped. It may be likely to return again though. In conclusion, the 1880s to the 1940s was a frightful time for the African Americans. Lynching was used as a weapon to scare the African Americans. Many questions are still asked today on why they killed not only African Americans, but innocent
same race crimes drastically different from one another? Referring back to paragraphs three and five, America’s reaction to a white and Hispanic male killing a black caused a drastic uproar. America reacted with protests, speeches, vandalisms, and looting, while the reaction to black on black crimes are little to none. People seemed to just sit back and observe it as if black on black crimes are expected. That shouldn’t be the mind-set of America.
In this type of policing there is little being done to prevent the crime. They only respond to a scene once the crime has already been committed and reported. This may not be the best type of policing. Crime prevention is a big part of keeping civilians safe and out of harms way. If there is no one out there preventing crimes from occurring, people are more prone to be injured.
Herbert informs his audience that many americans are unaware of ethnic profiling and its negative effects. I agree with herberts article that ethnic profiling is a big issue in the united states and needs to be stopped. The idea of racial profiling is completely immoral and should not be tolerated. The law promises the equality of everyone and law enforcement officals should not be allowed to practice this act. Individuals, blacks, and hispanics in this case are often profiled by law enforcement officers because there more likely to commit crimes.
Sixth principles “Police use Physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only when the exercise of persuasion advice and warning is found to be insufficient”. A lot of police agencies get in a lot of trouble because of wrongful death or injury. You can only use deadly force when the public put the officer in danger life or harming the public. If he uses the deadly force he has to have a better reason to the chief to use that type of force. Seventh principle, “Police at all times should maintain a relationship with the public that gives realty to historic tradition that police are the public the public are police the police being only members of the public who are paid attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the
This era was our first attempt for an organized police force. It showed us our flaws in the system and what people will do to ensure “their” best interests are protected and with money and power, could be above the law. The more corrupt the officers were, it seemed like the more violent criminals started to become. People where tired of being stepped on for someone else’s gain and those would be normal everyday people turned towards the criminal side. This led to rethinking the whole police system and how to better effect the people they were sworn to protect.
