Principles of Communication in adult social care settings. Assessment criteria. 1.1 Identify different reasons why people communicate. People communicate with each other for many different reasons. Some of these reasons are: * Expressing how we feel * Share information, ideas, opinions and knowledge * Maintaining relationships 1.2 Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of working in adult social care settings. Effective communication helps build strong professional bonds based on trust. It ensures that information is accurate and clear which reduces the chance of any mistakes being made. Effective communication also enables individual’s needs to be met and for health and social care workers to feel satisfied in their job. 1.3 Explain why it is important to observe an individual’s reactions when communicating with them. It’s important to observe an individual’s reaction when communicating with them so that you know if they fully understand what you’re trying to tell them. You should always see if their behaviour changes. The individual might sometimes be too shy to ask any questions or share their thoughts, when you notice that you can always encourage them to share their opinions. By observing their reactions when communicating, any problems can usually be identified and dealt with immediately. 2.1 Explain why it is important to find out an individual’s communication and language needs wishes and preferences. It’s important to find out an individual’s communication and language needs, wishes and preferences to be able to understand what the individual is trying to express. An individual might not be able to speak at all and they will try to communicate with us by making noises, facial expressions or body expressions, such as point to the thing they want.
