From childhood to adulthood you always want to be the best you can be. If your dream is to be an international gymnasts star, you begin with your first summersault. A sublime ballerina begins her training pretty soon after her first steps. A musical genius goes from playing Heart and Soul, to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. In high school, students have this huge determination to be successful. This is most particularly shown at Walt Whitman High School, where the novel The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids mostly takes place. The author Alexandra Robbins does a great job in showing the kinds of pressures high school students are dealing with today. The pressures of getting the highest grades, going to the best universities, and being accepted by your peers, are only some of things high school students have to deal with. The overachievers are the students who must excel in anything they possibly can, and will sacrifice everything to do so. In the book The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids, Alexandra Robbins does a brilliant job in showing how the overachieving culture has been defined by society. The novel takes place over three semesters at Walt Whitman High School. In the book, Alexandra Robbins follows eight students on their journey through high school to college. All eight of these students can be classified as overachievers. First, is AP Frank, who is a Whitman graduate whom now attends Harvard as a freshman. Second, is Audrey, who is a Hispanic junior who is considered a perfectionist. Third, is C.J., who is a junior, and is considered a flirt. Fourth, is Julie, who is a senior, and is acknowledged to be self-driven, and awkward. Fifth, is Pete, who is considered an underachiever by most because of his lack of motivation, and commitment.
