Elizabeth McCrimmon Unit 501 Use and develop systems that promote communication. Be able to address the range of communication requirements in own role Communication is defined as ‘The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium’ (Oxford dictionary) Effective communication is vital in my role as Advanced Care Co-ordinator. On a daily basis I communicate with service users and their families, staff within the site and from other departments within the company, External agencies and other professionals such as social work team and health care professionals. I have to adapt my communication depending on who I am communicating with, For example, Service users or a health care professional. To support effective communication you have to firstly recognise the barriers to communication and ensure that they do not prevent effective communication. For communication to be effective you must ensure that the message delivered well, it is delivered in a way that the other person understands. It is the correct information, delivered in the persons preffered way of communicating. You must also ensure that the message is being received/understood by the other person. Barriers to communication fall into many categories; over time I have faced barriers to communication which I have had to overcome. Environmental: noise levels, temperature, lighting. Emotional: A persons feelings/mood. Cultural: language used including jargon, dialect. Attitudinal: persons attitude to another or to the subject of conversation. Clinical: medical condition, learning disability, social skills. Working with adults with learning disabilities and complex needs often leads to issues with communication, over time I have worked with people who have little or no verbal communication.
