They do so by providing positive motivation and inspiration, providing support, and standing firm against adversity. In the field of behavioral science many studies have been conducted to ascertain the nature of leadership. Through the decades of research there have been numerous definitions of leadership and many attempts to determine if there are innate traits that differentiate leaders from followers. Many theories have been developed in an attempt to isolate the best leadership practices. The one concept that is generally accepted is that effective leadership must be adaptive to the context of the situation and that no single approach or style can be applied generically.…show more content…
The community educator, or change agent, should be aware of various the different leadership styles and the situations where they would be most appropriate. The supervision and administration of education in the early 1800’s was professionally unskilled; an extension of the men who governed within the local community. There was a job to be done and supervision of the local school fell to someone in the community. In an open social system, such as a typical public high school, the building level administrator must respond to numerous complex influences. It is important that today’s administrators possess highly refined communication skills and a thorough understanding of leadership theories in order to negotiate the factors that affect the learning
