Question 1. Create a hybrid theory/philosophy which combines the common elements found in the thinking of Case, Kouzes, and Drucker. In your philosophy, be sure to include the new definition of entrepreneurial leadership presented in Understanding Entrepreneurial Leadership in today’s Dynamic markets. According to the Macmillan Dictionary (2011), a hybrid is defined as a mixture of different things or styles. In addition, the term philosophy is defined as the study of theories about the meaning of things such as life, knowledge, and beliefs. Therefore, a hybrid theory is simply a new theory that is created by using elements of other theories. For example, a hybrid car is one that combines the features of a gasoline engine car with the features of an electric car. Another example is the animal liger, which is a hybrid between a male lion and female tiger. While researching the thinking’s of Steve Case, James Kouzes, and Peter Drucker as it pertains to entrepreneurial leadership, I’ve discovered that all of them share different views as to what determines a successful entrepreneur. Case, a co-founder of AOL, summarizes his ingredients for success with the “3 P’s”: people, passion, and perseverance. He feels that if those things are in the right balance, then anything is possible. Case has performed several seminars in which he has explained the role of the “3 P’s” in his own career. According to Case (2010), perseverance was an especially crucial component of AOL’s early stages, and it eventually lead to its success. James Kouzes, a professor at Santa Clara University’s Leavy School of Business, believes that the five practices of exemplary leadership are modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart.
