Decision-making Models Decision making is used to solve problems by selecting one course of action from several possible alternatives. It also can be a key component of time management skills. Different individuals and companies use various types of decision-making models. Most models must move through the basic stages in decision making. They are every part of producing good judgment. The rational decision-making model seems to fit the mold of my everyday situations at work. Many businesses use the rational decision-making model to help overcome issues within the workplace. "A rational decision making model provides a structured and sequenced approach to decision making" (Apex Leadership Ltd., 2007). In my current career status, the rational decision-making model is the type I live by. Due to working in such a structured facility, I must always follow some set of rules. This causes it to be very difficult to come to a conclusion when making decisions. Brainstorming always helps to facilitate the problems that must be overcome. To obtain a final decision, there are steps to be taken. In the rational model, there is a six-step process. First, define the problem. Second, the decision maker must identify decision criteria. Third, weigh out the criteria. Fourth, generate alternatives. Fifth, rate criteria of each alternative. Last, compute an optimal decision. Most of my roles at work were not as the sole decision maker, it was mainly the one who had to follow what decisions were made. In my current role as the program support assistant, my goal is to help my service overcome any obstacles. My first major decision that had to be made was to help make my department not only stronger than it was, but also to make us stand above the other departments.
