4.1 Compare Models of Reflective Practice The four elements of Kobl’s Learning Cycle: Kobl’s cycle starts with concrete experience, this is basically carrying out a task, doing something. The key to learning here is active involvement. The second stage is reflective observations. This involves taking time out from the actual ‘doing’, stepping away from the task and examining what has been done and experienced. At this stage lots of questions should be asked. Stage 3 is abstract conceptualisation where you make sense of what has happened and where you interpret and understand the relationships between the events. Here you need to compare what you have done, reflect on it and what you already know. Finally you have active experimentation where you examine how you are going to put your experience and what you have learnt into practice. This allows your new knowledge/experience to develop yourself and others personally and professionally. The six stages of Gibbs Reflective Cycle: It starts with description. In this section, you need to explain what you are reflecting. Perhaps include background information, such as what it is you’re reflecting on and why. This is followed by feelings, discuss your feelings and thoughts about the experience. Consider questions such as: How did you feel at the time? What did you think at the time? What did you think about the incident afterwards? You can discuss your emotions honestly, but make sure to remember at all times that this is an academic piece of writing, so avoid using the first name. The third stage is Evaluation, for your evaluation, discuss how well you think things went. Perhaps think about: How did you react to the situation, and how did other people react? What was good and what was bad about the experience? If you are writing about a difficult incident, did you feel that the situation was resolved afterwards and
