According to Daniel Kurland, (2000), “Critical thinking includes a complex combination of skills. Among the main characteristics are the following: rationality, self-awareness, honesty, discipline, and judgment.” I was working in a franchise restaurant as a supervisor and was faced with a situation where I had to make the decision whether to fire an employee or have him written up. This employee was a server and made a vulgar statement about a guest. This statement was overheard by other guests who were sitting at the bar. I then pulled the employee to the side and spoke to him. I then went to inform my managers of the situation. Now, this was not the first time that this employee has been warned about his behavior in the dining room. The managers then left it up to me to decide what should be done with this employee. The managers and I discussed this employees past problems and my final decision was to let him go. I based my decision on past evidence about this employee. I thought about this decision so I would not make a snap decision. I was thinking about the restaurant and how guests would perceive this restaurant. It takes one negative statement from one guest for any business to get a bad reputation. There are many important factors and benefits of critical thinking in the decision making processes. The more people learn how to become critical thinkers the more conscious they will become of their decision making (Powers, 2008. P.4). One important factor of the decision making process is evaluating a decision. Evaluating a decision leads to successful problem solving and decision making skills (Powers, 2008 p.2).
