Achieving Academic Excellence (EN110) Writing Assessment 5_06 November 23, 2013 “Why college education is important to me” "Nelson Mandela once said "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". This statement is more significant today because of the difficult times we are facing. At this stage in my life a college degree is the only thing that can help me to get a change. It’s becoming harder to find a well paying job that enables one to support their family. A College education means that my daughter will have a good example to follow. A college education also means that I can finally make my dreams come true and have a better quality of life. As I desire to return to the workforce and one day have my own business a degree will be necessary for me to succeed. (Nelson Mandela quote) Upon graduating from high school in 2000 it has been an ongoing struggle to get a job that fits my career path. Obtaining a college degree is important to me because it would enable me have many opportunities to provide a secure future for my family. I have been unemployed for almost 3 years and all vacancies in the newspaper require at least a first degree. With all those college and university graduates these days it’s so competitive in the job market. Although a college education was emphasized all throughout my high school years the motivation wasn't there until I had a baby. I realized that I was no longer living for myself. Obtaining a college degree didn't seem achievable to me until I had my daughter at age 28. Having my daughter made me realize that I needed a better plan than the one I currently had. Not only do I want to offer a secure living for my daughter but I want her to look up to me. I want to lay a firm foundation for her. My greatest desire is for my daughter to strive for excellence in education. As a child I had no one to
