Peter Weirs “The Truman show” (2007) is a film about corporate America, media manipulation of the public and the nature of free will. The films protagonist Truman Burbank is the main character that has been watched by 5000 cameras from birth and is the star of a reality show without him knowing. The text explores themes which explore the idea that we are being controlled, monitored or watched by institutions, though use of product placement and media. Images are a powerful tool in creating and manipulating ones reality, which is evident in the Truman show, through the use of film techniques. The use of product placement in the “Truman Show” manipulates the viewers of the show into buying the product that has been advertised. Throughout the film, the actors are consistently advertising products throughout this show. An example of this is when Truman’s wife in the “Truman Show” Meryl is holding a “Chefs pal- grater, dicer, peeler”, which shows the viewer that this is an advertisement and that sponsors pay for air time in the show. Another example of this is when Truman’s friend Marlon is holding up a bruski beer which shows the viewer that this is an advertisement aimed to persuade the viewers of the show to buy the product. Through the use of product placement weir is looking at the community we live in. Advertisement’s for “The Truman Show” followed by “true talk” focusing on issues arising out of “The Truman Show”, Cuts to audience watching. We discover that the moon is a symbol that has dominated much of the film, is actually the control room where Christof watches over Seahaven. Christof reveals that he had to manufacture ways to keep Truman on the island and finally came up with the idea of fear of water. When Christof positions himself in front of the moon, it makes him appear even more godlike as he surveys his creation. In conclusion the Tuman
