The Forgotten Member All teams must go through five stages of development in order to accomplish their goal as a successful team. The first stage is called forming. In this stage members meet and try to get to know each other. This is the stage in which the initial discussions are the rules and the goals for the group. The next stage is called storming. The storming stage is the stage in which the members of the group have conflicts and disagreements. The disagreements may sometimes cause members to form groups within the groups. During this stage, the group may have power struggles amongst the members. The stage after the storming stage is called the norming stage. The norming stage is the stage in which the group members come to an agreement and realize that completing the goals of the team is more important than the conflicts within the groups. The fourth stage in group development is called performing. The performing stage is the stage in which the team members are working together to accomplish the goals. The members learn how to settle their differences and to keep harmony because the members realize that the goals of the groups are more important than the differences. The last stage of group development is adjourning. The adjourning stage is the stage in which the team has successful completed their goals. The team members are able to leave the team satisfied with their accomplishment. They will also be willing to work with the group again on future assignments if needed. In our case study, “The Forgotten Member”, the group members were experiencing problems with a member not coming to meet with the team and with the member failing to do his part in the given assignment. The problems that the group was experiencing are a clear sign that this group was in stage two, the storming stage, of team development. The group leader, Christine, was unsure of how to
