June Avant English 101 November 22, 2010 Global Warming Controversy Global warming is an increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere which causes climatic changes. Global warming leads to changes in rainfall patterns, sea level, negative impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. Al Gore and Daniel Botkin both have great points about global warming. Botkin has a scientific perspective about global warming; however, Gore’s position is better. Al Gore uses facts and evidence to support his views about global warming.
Coal, natural gas, and oil are burned for energy in many ways such as cars and power plants. Forest burning for deforestation also causes C02 emissions. C02 emissions are harmful to the planet and cause the planet to heat up. Global warming causes worse weather conditions in the world amongst other issues. With so many issues that can arise with a hotter Earth, I believe this to be a major issue that needs to be addressed.
Carbon dioxide is a heat trapping greenhouse gas. It gets “released through human activities such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels, as well as natural processes such as respiration and volcanic eruptions” (Global Climate Change: Key Indicators, 2014). An increase in carbon dioxide means more heat is trapped thereby raising the Earth’s temperature. Global surface temperature needs to also be monitored. Not just one area but globally!
Even the extensive evidence that high amounts of greenhouse gases do have an impact on the rising temperature many still think all of this is part of the Earth’s natural cycle. During the last century temperatures have increased on a global scale, known as global warming. There has been a sharp rise in average temperature being 0.7°C between 1900 and 200. Scientists believe that this rise in temperature is mainly due to human factors and the increase of industrialisation and the revolution. These industrial activities have raised atmospheric gases such as carbon dioxide which contribute to greenhouse gases.
“Their influence is known as the greenhouse gases, which are carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and water vapor”(“American Meteorological Society 2007”). These gases mixes with the sun ultraviolet rays, disburse into the earth atmosphere with harmful results. Carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels is one way the human activities effects the environment. Carbon dioxide from the exhaust of cars in heavily polluted cities, farming machinery such as tractors, and smokestacks of refinery companies are just some of the ways carbon dioxide gases are release into the atmosphere by human contributors. The nitrous oxide gases affect the aquatic ecosystem food web chains, which leads from the smallest phytoplankton up to the largest mammal, which is man.

Those are two of the main questions that have come to mind about the way to focus our thoughts on what can be done to decrease this issue in the world today. One of the major atmospheric issues that has been destroying the environment for years is global warming. I have read that in the present compared to the past global warming has increased tremendously.
These gases, with carbon dioxide being the main culprit, prevent solar heat from escaping the earth’s atmosphere, resulting in a rise in temperature, or the greenhouse effect. Already scientists around the world are detecting the numerous and dangerous effects of global warming (Johnson 18). Through these different leaks and spills our Canadian environment is slowly being negatively effected. The impacts of global warming on the Canadian environment are immense. Some of these impacts include ice bridges melting, and will have to be replaced with traditional building materials.

Global warming also has natural causes though they are often down-played in the media.
We then, can assume the reason for the increasing temperature was resulted from industries, over-powering energy with coal during that specified time period. Manufacturing produces massive amounts of carbon dioxide along with other greenhouse gases, resulting in warming the whole planet, hene causes climate changes. With the burning of extremely harmful greenhouse gases, we could stand to solve this problem by doing what we already do to pollute our own planet, just in a much more helpful scale. The dust storms that plague the surface of Mars are another topic to consider. While a storm is usually just a temporary headache, dust storms on Mars are quite common and strong, and further limit solar power to the surface. The largest of these storms can cover much of the entire surface of the planet and commonly last for months at a time. With habitation, this could also be lessened, but constantly having buildings and equipment destroyed would be something that would have to be addressed properly and some sort of working solution be implemented before any sort of progress could
