THAT SINKING FEELING 1. What mistakes did Debbie make in her test preparation that probably harmed her performance? First of all she didn’t know what kind of questions was going to be on the test. She didn’t know how many questions were going to be on it. She didn’t read the test instructions thoroughly, therefore not knowing how many points each section was worth to her grade. 2. What mistakes did Debbie make during the test that hurt her? She took too much time on some questions. She left some of the questions blank. She didn’t utilize her time effectively. 3. What was right about Debbie’s initial approach to the test? She was confident that she would do well on the test. She showed no signs of anxiety. 4. What should Debbie have done differently in calculating the amount of time to devote to each portion of the test? Why? She should have answered the easier questions first. This would have allowed her to have more time for the more difficult ones. 5. What specific strategies would have helped Debbie with the multiple-choice questions? What strategies could she have used on the essay? For the multiple-choice she could have first read the question carefully, she should have tried to answer the questions in her head before looking at the possible answers. She could have looked for words like every, always, only, none and never. She could have made an educated guess. For the essay she should have it carefully, looked for keywords that indicated what the instructor was looking for. 6. If you were in Debbie’s shoes, what would you do with only 10 minutes left in the test? I would have written something like a short out-line for the essay using key words. I would have then made educated guesses on the multiple-choice that I’d left
