T: Title When looking for the poem I was to learn and teach, I was essentially judging every book by its cover; only the books were the poems in Perrine’s Literature and the covers were their titles. When I came across the piece I would end up selecting, Gary Soto’s Small Town with One Road, I gave it a double take. Growing up in Michigan I often visited my dad’s hometown: the small, rural city of Perry. This town fit the title’s description perfectly as Perry consisted of one major highway running through the heart of the houses and businesses. I went on to speculate that the author of the piece was most likely describing some event passing through the usually undisturbed, minute town. P: Paraphrase This is where we almost lived. Here in San Joaquin Valley the major highway scares the wildlife. The children aren’t afraid though. They cross the road to the local candy store full of joy. They see fun in everything. Spending their earned money on sugary delights, they return home to play with the stray dogs and cats. A metal clang brings them in for dinner. They know the meal they will receive, and the food makes them strong for the work they are tasked with. No one can escape the heat. The farm tools reflect the source of income used by the mother – who could have been my wife, who, in her youth, worked in the heat and lived a hard life. It’s not too late to live here. I could quit my job and return to the family farm. My daughter wouldn’t survive though. She is too dependent. We view this past time in the comfort of our lifestyle. A local boy reminds me of myself. When I point him out to my daughter she stands alone to watch him. The boy checks the road before making the jump to the other side. C: Connotation The imagery used by the author is very illustrative and in most of his descriptions one can visualize the exact scene which Soto writes. Soto also
