Law enforcements key purpose is to keep order and deter criminal activity in this country. In history the system of American police was something learned from Great Britain and adapted by America. In the past the first ideals of policing were controlled by the able-bodied men and young boys who were part of the first Europeans to venture to our lands. This was mainly a defensive motion as it was used to defend themselves from the natives to the lands that did not wish to share their home (Schmallager, 2009). As time went on and the natives became more settled and peace was more successful, policing became one of the primary duties of the Justices of the Peace.
Law enforcement agencies today still patrol the streets with the goal to prevent crimes. Public approval and cooperation were the two principals of effective policing. Peel stated that police should perform duties upon public approval and must secure the cooperation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to maintain the public’s respect (Larrabee, A. 2012). Police need to understand the different cultures which can be accomplished by training and education.

Henry Fielding is credited with two major contributions to the field of policing. First Fielding advocated change and spread awareness about social and criminal problems through his writings. Second he organized a group of paid non uniformed citizens who were responsible for investigating crimes and prosecuting offenders. The group was called the Bow Street Runners, who were paid through public funds that emphasized crime prevention in addition to crime investigation and apprehension of criminals.
The history of policing is for law enforcement. Police officers were in place as protectors of the citizens. Police officers are to enforce the laws of the government on the state and federal level. There were many crimes happening without any authority figures to enforce the laws. Robert Peel who is known as the “father” of modern policing fought to improve law enforcement in England in the 1900.
Sir Robert Peel believed that crime prevention could be achieved without infringing on the lives of the public. A key concept that peel believed is the people are the police and the police are the people. Mr. Peel introduced twelve principals of his theory of policing, which are as important now as they were in the 1800s. Sir Robert Peel also changed the way the citizens viewed police by requiring them to wear uniforms, and badges with identification numbers on them to make the police easily to identify. Mr. Peel’s metropolitan police force was nick named the “bobbies” after him.

Time like after hurricane Katrina when public disorder ran rampant, police tried to maintain good order but needed help from the government.
The actual purpose of the police in theory is to deter crime before it happens. The police are first responders and they are only as effective as there public support. Law enforcements role in the judicial system is to enforce laws. The police's main role is the upkeep of the queen’s peace and to prevent and detect crime. Keeping the peace means providing a presence at known trouble hot spots for example city centres.
