Sir Robert Peel’s Principles - Essay “The police are the public, and the public are the police” – Sir Robert Peel Two-time Conservative Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Robert Peel, helped create modern day concept of policing. His contribution includes what’s known as the Peelian Principles. These principles were used to create and maintain an ethical police force. I have managed to apply three of the twelve principles, with the help of Constable Paul Nadeau, from 51 Division. Constable Nadeau is part of the Yonge Street Mission who involves themselves with helping the community. The first principle discussed in my one on one discussion was “good appearance commands respect.” The physical appearance of an individual is the first perception given to those in the surroundings. This includes: height, weight, body tone, neatness of clothing, hygiene, etc. “We definitely use this as one of our mandatory principles to date,” said Constable Nadeau. “Not only to policing, but this principle can be applied to many other careers out there,” he adds, when asked about good appearance. The dark navy blue shirt, cargo pants with red stripes down the sides, and peaked hat is not only a uniform, but also the identity of the Toronto Police Service. “I feel respected by most people I encounter, in my uniform. Maybe it’s because I don’t have a big belly like those guys on TV.” he says with a chuckle. This proves that the Toronto Police Service continues to follow Peel’s principle of good appearance. The next principle talked about was “the police must be under government control.” This means that police services must also be under control of a higher authority to maintain obedience amongst them. “I believe this is an important principle, because it helps us to make better decisions without having to fear of any trouble,” he points out.
