Nick Wright U.S. History Ms. Wilkinson May 6, 2011 The Powers of the Federal Government One issue in politics is the amount of power that the federal government should be allowed to have. One side believes that the government should be there, helping us, but we shouldn’t be able to notice their presence. The other side believes that the government should actively participate in the everyday lives of citizens. In the United States today, the power of our government tends to lean towards the former of the two. We know that the government is there, protecting us, providing for us, and ensuring that our lives are good. But they do not actively interfere in our lives unless they have a very good reason. One thing our government does is ensure our security. Every state has an active police force. Even though we see police cars and officers every day, they are not allowed to interfere with our lives unless they have probable cause. A police officer has to catch you in the act of breaking a law to be able to approach you and give you a ticket or arrest you. They also have to get a search warrant to be allowed to search any of your property. If they search your car, your house, or any of your possessions without a search warrant and find anything illegal, they aren’t allowed to use that as evidence in a case against you. These regulations ensure that our police forces are there to assist us in keeping our country safe, but not to get in our way if we aren’t doing anything wrong. The government also controls our military.
