Mini Research 10 December 2012 School Uniforms Does a school uniform really affect a student academically? Experts say uniforms prevent gang activity, encourage discipline, and improve attendance. But, they also say a uniform violates student’s freedom of expression, are a financial burden on parents, and is difficult to enforce at public schools. “A Uniform Look” and “The Role of School Uniforms in Creating an Academically Motivating Climate: Do Uniforms Influence Teacher Expectations?” are articles that talk about school uniforms. The two authors, Yasmine Kalkstein and John Huss, express their thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of school uniforms. It is a common belief that school uniforms prevent bullying According to Kalkstein, school uniforms are not responsible for the decrease in bullying and students will find other ways to compete and that uniforms have no direct bearing on academic achievement (25). While Kalkstein believes that are not necessarily benefit Mark Mathabane believes that school uniforms are actually a good thing. In the article “Appearances are Destructive” Mathabane talks about a personal experience where he enrolled his sisters at a public school near his home. Mathabanes sisters, who had previously lived in South Africa, were ridiculed by the other students because of their clothing (Mathabane). This example shows how school uniforms keep students from having to deal with bullying. If that school had enforced uniforms Mathabanes sister would not have been picked on. Why?, because they would have been dressed like everyone else. Huss also believes uniforms will decrease the discipline problems. Moving on to my second point, uniforms make the school more secure.
