Relationship between Private and Public Police Relationship between Private and Public Police Originally it was the accountability of the public law enforcement officers to provide safety and security to all of the people in society and all of the property that lay within the jurisdictions that these police officers served. In modern day, public and private police officers can be found functioning together on a regular basis at many public and private functions and events. Additionally, it is not unusual to see public police officers working part-time or side jobs with private security officials in order to protect important assets. There are certain jurisdictions throughout the United States that have given particular private security officers the same arrest powers that public officers have, because of the lack of public police officers available. According to "Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority Making Life Safer" (2007), "the educational opportunities that exist in modern day, the availability of these educational opportunities and the liability problems that exist as a result of not having professionally trained individuals working private security is almost prominent.” Private security companies that are relatively large, are now starting to recognize the significance of having officers that are better trained and the growing level of professionalism for their security officers to have for the solitary purpose of creating contracts and in order to compete against public police officers. In addition, public police officers are given their salaries from the tax payer's dollars and are upheld by strong unions. This being said, public police officers are more so than not held responsible for their dealings as an individual.
