What is your name and profession? My name is Andrew Cano and I am a higher education professional currently functioning as an analyst for a community college’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). What does “adjunct” mean, and what do you do? The term “adjunct” means that I am not a full-time instructor. Rather, I am currently only teaching part-time as needed. While I have various administrative duties, other adjunct instructors are teaching as many courses as they can until they can find a full-time teaching position at a college or university. In my specific case, I manage the day-to-day operations of the QEP, which we have named the Learning Environment Adaptability Project (LEAP). I try to take a few minutes each day to read about current studies and often read books either directly about the field or related ones so I can look at issues from multiple perspectives. What are your greatest strengths? Weaknesses? I think my greatest strengths are that I am dedicated to helping people improve their lives through education, I have a passion for all I do, and I am willing to be flexible when need be as well as firm when I have to be. My biggest weakness is an unwillingness to accept my limitations. For example, I often take on too many responsibilities and find myself not being able to do as well as I could in any of them given how overstretched I am. I also have a lot of impatience when it comes to improving things such as how we deliver higher education and need to be willing to accept how slow change can be. Why have you selected psychology as a profession? I did not choose it as a profession as my graduate work is in Higher Education but I like to study psychology in my free time as I think a lot of principles of the field can be applied to making better public policy and improving human
