Progression in America from 1870-1920 America progressed a lot between 1870 and 1918. To me progressivism is an act that is intended to make things better for the parties involved. Although there were some setbacks during this time period, I feel there were more accomplishments then setbacks. Events that caused progressivism such as the Homestead Act, Industrialization, working conditions, New Immigration, and the Progressive Movement, shaped America for the following decades. Whether the progress was good or bad it changed America immensely. The Homestead Act was put into effect January 1, 1863. This act was designed for people, under certain requirements, to register to receive land that was unoccupied. For the citizens of the United States the government was giving unoccupied land away. For the price of ten dollars the person may receive the amount of land specified. I think this was very beneficial and helped make a lot of progress. This was good for the Americans because they were getting land for basically nothing and it was only fair to them because immigration was going on at this time. If the immigrants came and took the unoccupied land over Americans, that could have caused a lot of controversy. In 1879, the Southerners started to moved west. They barely received any privileges and were denied many rights in the south. It was very hard for them to succeed because there were many obstacles preventing them, such as poverty. The west was “free and fertile” and it was basically a new start. (41) This was good for them because the system of labor and the pay in the south was terrible. Making money was a hassle and it wasn’t enough for the families to live off of. The west had much greater opportunities with a lot more freedom.
