Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism has evolved throughout the years. From the Los Angeles Rodney King beating to the slaying of Michael Brown in St. Louis, law enforcement officials continue making racism an issue within the world. People don’t always understand what the officer faces, though. Police Officers must make quick determinations of wrong doing in most situations.
The current El Paso Police Department is a prime example. A recent slew of investigations by local news stations in the Sun City revealed several “corrupt” cops who had overstepped their boundaries, or had hidden behind their badge to commit crimes. And sometimes, that “thin blue line”, as one officer called it, can divide an entire community— or even a police force. “There will be corruption everywhere you go, but of course it depends on the city that you are in,” Officer Doe said, as he drove through the city. “We are human too.
Stereotyping happens every day. People in the community started to watch the police when they would conduct routine stops and searches. They began to claim racism and claim that police officers were discriminating. Police must prove of their reason to justify a stop and arrest. If the only reason to pull someone over depends on his or her race, this causes a discriminatory impact.

Many people feel that a lot of cases are proved to be unjust or never receive justice because of the people involved. Race has become a very serious issue and is often brought up in court cases more than people tend to believe. The Sean Bell case is a prime example of case injustice. Cecil Foster's thesis was to get the point that racism was still a huge problem and people weren't noticing how bad it was actually getting. He mentioned that the Rodney King verdict triggered the worst outbreak of violence since the Watts riots. The Rodney King riot began because an African-American known as Rodney King was badly beaten by the Los Angeles police officers. After this problem had occurred, Rodney became the main focus for how bad race issues were.
In the 1950’s police officers were male (women were not allowed to patrol) the police officers may have had some high education and a brief stint in police academy or some equivalent training. Police officers at that time were handling situations like domestic disturbances, high speed chases, robberies, and murder cases. Supreme Court’s ruling on police procedures such as beating a person with a bully club as punishment or police brutality was unheard of. Now in today’s society policing has change dramatically. Law Enforcement is making arrest every minute from different ethnic groups. Law enforcement officer’s relationship with different ethnic groups has been a rocky road for a very long time because of cultural differences and social differences. Sometimes the lines of communication seem to be strained between officers and minorities. Many minorities feel as though the officers patrol their communities with an iron fist instead of with compassion or equality. The police today must contend directly with a number of issues that carry a racial subtext both in fact and in perception: crime, drugs, disorder, civil unrest, and police brutality.
The main concept behind these explications is that different races are faced with their own unique types of strains. These types of strains are economic, family related, educational, communal, and discriminatory. All of these strains have some level of interconnectivity with one another that can lead to people committing criminal acts. The reading mainly focuses on the African American and White racial groups. Even though all of these strains have an influence on the racial differences in crime, I believe that the community contributes a lot to these differences.
