MOHD FAZLI BIN YUSOF ENG4U-01 POETRY ANALYSIS “FIRST LESSON” by PHILIP BOOTH In the very beginning of life, everyone must learn to depend on the people around them because eventually life will get harder for them .This poem expresses the view that there will always be someone to guide and help us. When life starts to reach the point when it gets too hard to deal with we must rely on the help of another person so that the hardship can be lessen. When a person encounters a problem, then the most suitable thing to do is to ask the people closest to you to help out and maybe it will end up that they will teach a very important and remarkable lesson to you that will change your life for the better. In the first stanza of “First Lesson” the father shows his daughter that he will always be there to help and guide her. If she can no longer cope with her problems, the father will always be there to catch her. In the line 3-5 the father is teaching her daughter how to start being independent, and not to give up easily. Line 6-8 is telling us that the father is saying to the daughter that she will start off slow, and in due time she will progress even further to become a better person. With the help of her father, she can move forward in her life easily. Line 8-10 shows that the daughter has become a better and more improved person and that she no longer has to rely on her father to solve any problems. She can now be independent. In the last stanza, lines 11-15. This lesson means that there is nothing wrong in asking help, and not to forget the people that help you when you were in trouble and having problems. In the poem there is a sentence in the poem that is using personification which is line 15 "and the sea will hold you" because there is just no way that a sea can hold someone physically.
