Assignment 2B: Discourse Community The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity has been a community of young, educated, and motivated men since 1868. Throughout it’s long and fruitful existence it has done well in becoming a recognized organization within the United States and in some places around the world. Sponsoring the development of young men in mind, brotherhood, and community Pi Kappa Alpha, or Pike, strives to raise the young aspiring men of college communities to become productive members of society. Within the workings of the fraternity you will find that it is highly complicated and structured. The membership is constantly tested and held to the highest of expectations, as well as their ability to communicate among each other. Communication is a pillar of understanding within this community that allows for its productivity as well as its progression. On a Sunday evening March 1st in the year 1868 Pi Kappa Alpha began at The University of Virginia. (G&G) The very first chapter, dubbed the name “Alpha”, was created in 1869. Students attending Davidson College, North Carolina later that year created “Beta”, the second chapter chartered, as well. Three other chapters were also created over the following 5 years. After the beginning chapters had adapted, the first inter-chapter convention was held in 1874 in Richmond Virginia. (G&G) This would mark the first time that all the chapters of Pi Kappa Alpha had joined together to discuss the workings of their fraternity and to reflect off each other’s experiences to further revise the fraternity. This precedential event preceded a gathering of Pike chapters who come together yearly under the name, “Pike University”, to share and discuss fraternity matters.
