National Honor Society

NHS Essay Being a nominee, I realize that it is an honor to be eligible to participate in the National Honor Society. Since the National Honor Society is known for helping children, the needy, the elderly, and non- profit organizations, I feel as though it is the right society for me because I have always been known as the one with exceptional empathy. I feel obligated to use my gifts in an organization as inspiring as the National Honor Society. Over the past three years I have demonstrated all four principles: scholarship, leadership, character, and community service. During my high school career, I have put a lot of effort forward in my schoolwork and have challenged myself with advanced courses. I have successfully been competing against my other classmates to try and be the best I can be. I have received honor roll every semester of my high school career. Being selected as a potential candidate for NHS proves my academics, but what makes me a great candidate is not just my average. It is difficult to narrow down many instances in which I have showed great leadership. I am looked at as a leader and have taken many responsibilities for various group projects. I have discovered a lot about fairness, compromise, and sacrifice to become a “good” leader. Often I have had to sacrifice my own free time and personal desires just for the benefit of others. I believe this is the most important quality in being a leader, the ability to sacrifice individual time and desires for the gain of the people that you are leading. I haven’t had much involvement in the community, but what I have done is very important not only to myself but my family also. For the past five years I have raised money for the United Cancer Services of Elkhart County. This is important to me because my great grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008, and has beat cancer three times.
