The Conflict of Gay Marriage in America PHI 103: Informal Logic The Conflict of Gay Marriage in America Part One – Thesis Because America is a country founded on equal rights for all, marriage is a right that must be afforded to homosexuals. Arguments against gay marriage are often supported by religious ideals. In America, where we have freedom of religion or freedom to even choose not to be religious, these arguments should not be considered when forming laws. To do so would not be just. Part Two – Argument “Not allowing gays to marry is discrimination because they do not receive the same legal benefits that married people do.
Sullivan says that minors and close family members should not be given the right to marry because minors are unable to understand such a commitment. The marriage of close family members creates incest, which threatens the trust and responsibility the family needs to survive. Sullivan asks if homosexuals fall in the same categories. Sullivan says that “domestic partnership,” a conservative concept, is one of the strongest arguments for gay marriage. Domestic partnerships qualify for benefits previously reserved for heterosexual married couples.
Marriage is a commitment between two people to share their lives together including all the benefits that heterosexual marriages have. It’s not about what kind of sex you have, but what kind of family you have. Gay marriage will not have a negative effect on traditional marriage; it may set an example for everyone else. Statistics should that heterosexual marriages have a 40-50% divorce rate. Some states had a substantial divorce rate reduction once gay marriage was legalized (ProCon, 2012).
Homosexual Rights Many people argue that homosexuality is wrong, that its a sin, and claim it is gross or inhuman. Likely, people who claim this are uneducated straight people and they have never actually talked to a homosexual person about their relationship. Or, perhaps they have never thought about how homosexual people might feel when they are being discriminated against, when they are being called names. Or they simply don’t care enough to ask and find it easier to just discriminate against them rather than look at the other side of the story. Well today is hopefully the day that they will learn that it’s really none of their business, and that we all look the same on the inside, and they should just have the same rights as everyone else because there would most likely be less problems if they had the same marriage rights.
Americans across the nation are introduced to the play in school. The play’s main moral is that true love should not and will not be separated. Most Americans agree, yet majority of those same Americans say gay marriage should not be allowed, even if it is a relationship based on great amounts of love for one another. These people would be hypocrites. They say true love should not be rejected, yet they themselves reject the love between homosexuals.
Many people feel that marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. Well, that's the most often heard argument, one even codified in a recently passed U.S. federal law. Yet it is easily the weakest. It seems to me that if the straight community cannot show a compelling reason to deny the institution of marriage to gay people, it shouldn't be denied. And such simple, nebulous declarations are hardly a compelling reason.
Thomas mentions that gay and lesbian marriages should be the choice of the individuals not the government. He promotes gay and lesbian marriages by saying those who vote against gay and lesbian marriage are people of injustice. He states that we cannot solely base our decision on history alone, if so most states would still prohibit the marriage of different races. Thomas states that marriage should promote family and stability and people should not be denied this right. By depriving millions of gay American adults the rights that come from marriage, denies equal protection against the law.
Since procreation can only occur between a man and a woman then same-sex marriage would not be able to achieve this purpose. There is a huge disconnection between homosexuality, and procreation and therefore, marriage. Lastly, homosexual relationships are abnormal and unnatural. Even though in today’s society, gay couples might be tolerated socially that does not mean gay marriage should be validated by the government. Using the same argument same-sex couples should not receive federal benefits.
With these facts, gay marriage should not be considered an abomination nor a sin. . Gay Marriage vs. the Bible: Hypocrisy of Life The dream of every young girl is to one day stand before her family, friends, and God and commit her life in marriage to the one she loves. However, the dream of marriage for homosexuals is tarnished with acts of hatred, homophobia, and constant hypocrisy from those that interpret the Bible in a manner that benefits their own personal beliefs and understanding. This is a country based on freedom of religion, yet the religion in which this country was founded on,
Among these two, the perceived general philosophy towards homosexuality is mostly unenthusiastic. Because religion has a huge effect on the norms of a society, individuals’ perception is shifted to reflect the beliefs that are taught. This can be interpreted in the Bible and the Qur’an as dispiriting to the LGBT community. Some main topics that are prohibited would include same-sex marriages, same-sex acts, and the overall
