The Conflict of Gay Marriage in America PHI 103: Informal Logic The Conflict of Gay Marriage in America Part One – Thesis Because America is a country founded on equal rights for all, marriage is a right that must be afforded to homosexuals. Arguments against gay marriage are often supported by religious ideals. In America, where we have freedom of religion or freedom to even choose not to be religious, these arguments should not be considered when forming laws. To do so would not be just. Part Two – Argument “Not allowing gays to marry is discrimination because they do not receive the same legal benefits that married people do. This is a country formed on the basis of the separation of church and state. I myself am a Christian but I don’t expect my beliefs to rule anyone’s life but my own. When a politician says, “A marriage is a union between a man and a woman.” I think, “To who?! Who says a marriage is between a man and a woman? The Bible? Why are we so up in arms over this? Why are we assuming Armageddon will be knocking at the door if gay marriage were legalized? Nothing would be different, nothing. When Congress repealed “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” there were many of my co-workers (Airman) who were worried about the consequences. Not a single thing had changed. Everyone did their job and got along like any other day, only now we knew who was gay. In fact, moral went up because many Airman were no longer living a
