Theodore McBean 11/19/2011 English 102 0828 prof.Cottrellkn Theme: Women’s role in society has always been inferior in has always been inferior in comparison to men role in society. As a result the fate of women to whom society denies any opportunity for fulfillment is second class. I. Women’s fight for equality in history Women had to fight and claw throughout history to break the views men had on women to get where they are today. However throughout the history of time there has never been a period where the matriarchy ruled, has been documented. With the exception of ancient Egypt documentation of all the cultures (Greek,Roman,Mosaic,Hebrew,Celtic,Germanic,Assyrian,Christian,Babylonian) depict women as already subordinated to men socially and legally. Ancient texts that influenced western European though and law for many centuries, and which are still studied and revered today, such as Homer’s Iliad, virgil’s Aeneid, the old testament, the pontifications of Aristotle, Plutarch, Hippocrates, Philo, Cicero, all mention one things in common; justification of the subjection of women to men. In ancient Greece, Athenian women were given no education and were married at puberty to grown men. They remained property of their fathers who could divorce them and make them marry another. They lived in segregation and could not leave the house without a Chaperone. Women were unable to buy, or sell land. If a woman was raped he had to either divorce her or loss his citizenship. As for the women, she was not allowed to wear jewelry or take part in public ceremonies. Throughout most of Roman reign the law states the power of the husband is absolute; he could strangle his wife to the point of killing her. II.
