Questia states, “Despite their vital role in Ancient Greek and Roman society, women were not considered full citizens and in most instances required a guardian – their fathers, and later husbands – to represent them” (“Women in Ancient Greece and Rome”). As his poem progresses, Homer presents female characters in different aspects, demonstrating that women should not be confined to the standard they were held in that society. At the beginning of the book, women are first introduced as being loyal, faithful, and under complete servitude to men. This presentation of women demonstrates the view of women at that time. This is evident in the treatment and actions of Penelope and Calypso.
Theory two is that she only portrayed herself in manly clothing with beards in art, statues and portraits. However, most had titles or something to indicate that she was a woman. Her father was king and a very successful one. He died when she was twelve and she then married her half-brother. Queen
Spartans were they only Greek society that prescribed a public education for girls. Their education started at age six or seven when they went to live in their sisterhood barracks where they would learn gymnastics, wrestling and combat skills. It is not known whether their training was as rugged and ruthless as the boys but it still would have quite strenuous as it was vital that the girls were to become healthy. At the age of eighteen Spartan women received a skills and fitness test which would access if they were fit to marry. (Crystalinks) According to Xenophon their education was based around the theory of Eugenics which is the idea of bringing about improvement in the type of offspring produced.
In East Asia, women were subjected to a strong patriarchal authority. Through the use of foot binding (implemented when they were young) freedom was especially limited. Such as in present day Saudi Arabia women barely had any rights and were thought of as owned and a service to their husbands. Women in present day Saudi Arabia can’t go anywhere without a man and must wear a niqab or a burka to hide them from the affection of other men. Unlike Saudi Arabia today, East Asian women bind their feet to make them appeal more attractive to men.
Both Han China and classical Athens shared many ideas bout governments, women, and children. The ideas weren’t exactly the same there were differences, like they didn’t have the same form of government and women had different right in both Han China and classical Athens. Even though there are differences between Han china and classical Athens involving women children and government, the similarities out way the differences. During both classical Athens and Han China women were thought of nothing much than a house wife. During classical Athens women could not leave there homes unless there was a religious festival, birth of a child, or funeral but have to have their heads covered.
Woman from Willendorf was carved in the Upper Paleolithic Period (c. 42,000-8000 BCE) out of oolitic limestone colored with red ocher, and the Aphrodite of Knidos was carved during the Late Classical Period (c. 450-400 BCE) out of marble. The size is another distinct difference. Only 4 3/8” tall the Woman from Willendorf could fit the palm of your hand. The people from the Upper Paleolithic Period moved around a lot, so the sculptures had to be small enough to move with them. Since the sculptors of the Late Classical Period were looking for an ideal figure form, the Aphrodite of Knidos was curved to be 6’8" life like.
Artemis may not be one of the most widely known goddesses but her role in how we view powerful women today. Artemis is not inherently Greek, as research indicates a female hunting figure dating back to the Paleolithic Period (Powell 224). She is greatly revered and sought after by many men within her myths (such as Orion, the river god Alpheus, and many unnamed men and gods) but none could win her heart. This shows us that Artemis was truly independent and did not need to follow the normalcy of having a companion/husband, much like Athena. Unlike Athena, however, Artemis is still viewed as having her femininity.
The Women from 1920s and 2012 The women in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was published on the 1920s and demonstrates that the women got a few rights and the women that are today, are the most human privileged. The women on the 1920s had a style of living that did not have too many privileges or rights, in the book of The Great Gatsby, the are two kinds of women in social life, the rich and the poor; as and example of the poor women at the book is Myrtle, where she has to work for her own living, she lived in a garage and Myrtle also had some restrictions in her life, such as in her economy status. On the other hand is Daisy, where she was not too rich but not poor, Daisy had the fortune of not being working hard; she lived
While Wollstonecraft talks about co-education, one can infer that women are at least educated on a basic level. Pizan lives in a society where royalty is still prevalent and societies’ thinking is very narrow. The era that Pizan lives in is very uneducated and women are looked as not having a life unless it benefits the man. Although Wollstonecraft parallels to that in a way, one can tell that women have a greater importance in her time period. Many debates have happened whether or not these women approach feminism for their time period.
They are dressed very minimally (or not at all) in order to showcase their feminine figures. Although various sizing for some of these statues have been discovered, Venus of Willendorf, the Snake Goddesses, and the Cycladic figures were
