Friday, February 25th 2005 On Common Ground : Enhancing Communities Together A Town and Gown Symposium - Guelph Hello everyone, my name is Janette Loveys and I’m the Manager of Community Development for the City of Guelph. I have been given the honour of wrapping up the Town and Gown symposium and your time with us. And; to also leave you with a few closing thoughts that hopefully you will find somewhat inspiring for your travels home. Before I begin, I would first like to take this opportunity to thank our many presenters, panellists, moderators, the organizing committee and staff at both the U of G and City of Guelph, and also our sponsors. But what is also inherent in those words, again carefully crafted by the organizers, is that, coordination, cooperation, collaboration and communication is the very foundation for our common ground. 1 The famous four C’s of community development. If students and communities are truly to be on common ground with one and another, then we need to continually find ways to challenge ourselves and improve upon those four C’s that are at the very essence of our complex relationships with one another. Let me attempt to demonstrate, if I may. The first of two of those C’s ; Coordination and Cooperation can occur on many levels, both micro and macro, and would be considered by many as not completely risky nor highly invested or intrusive by stakeholders. Ultimate control is still left inside the walls of the individual stakeholder. If one was look up coordination or cooperation in a thesaurus they would find words like team work, assistance, support, and bring together all found there. And, I’m positive that in each university city there are millions of great ways to demonstrate that assistance and team work is alive and perhaps
