Today there is a special branch of the military specifically designed to handle any condition and any foe without hesitation or remorse. This specialized branch is so effective and well equipped today because of who they were in the past. They were built based on some of the strongest principles, allowing them to rise against any quarry when one, willingly or not, defied them and their beloved country. The early advances of the U.S. military required a special branch to combine all of its power into a superior fighting force allowing them to fight in any country, design and revolutionize weaponry, and help to shape the New American government as it stands today. They required and called for a new type of branch of the military, one that could go anywhere and anytime, no matter what the conditions were. After America gained some stable allies and trades, they were called upon to set off for foreign, or hard to reach soil to protect the interests of their newly formed country. During the American Revolution, numerous significant political deliberations occurred in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, including the founding of the Marine Corps. The Continental Congress met on November 10, 1775 in the Tun Tavern to draft a declaration calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore. The resolution was approved officially forming the Continental Marines. Their first leader, Samuel Nicholas, became Commandant of the newly formed Marines. Tun Tavern’s owner and popular patriot, Robert Mullan, became his first captain and recruiter. While word reached the ears of eager soldiers, the Marines were gaining enough strength and men that they were ready for action by early 1776. The men that made up the Marine Corps were some of the toughest and bravest one could ever come across. They were trained for any condition and weather, for example, when 400 enemies, deep behind enemy lines, surrounded them in a -40 degree winter while it was heavily snowing outside at the battle of the Choison Reservoir in WWI. Of course, the Marines came out on top and decimated their adversaries. During the late 1700s and early 1800s, there were not many specific requirements for Marines like there are today, but they at least had to pass an age test, Initial Strength Test, and some form of psychiatric test. Though, if determined, it was not entirely hard to cheat these tests for those who wanted the path of glory and honor earlier than allowed. After the initial screening, they would ship off to camp to be taught specific tactics and strategies to help them overcome any adversary that comes across their
