George Washington - The Legacy George Washington: The Legacy Just being the first President of The United States earns George Washington the #1 spot in my report. George Washington became Americas first President when he unanimously won the election in 1789. He was a man of many features and was considered by all “Father of our country”. (www.consitutionfacts.com) George Washington was more than just the first President of the United States. He served as a role model for countless soldiers during America’s Revolutionary War and helped establish future presidents.
ZINN CHAPTER 4 1. What is the thesis of this chapter? Around 1776, certain important people in the English colonies made a discovery that would prove enormously useful for the next two hundred years. They found that by creating a nation, a symbol, a legal unity called the United States, they could take over land, profits, and political power from favorites of the British Empire. In the process, they could hold back a number of potential rebellions and create a consensus of popular support for the rule of a new, privileged leadership. When we look at the American Revolution this way, it was a work of genius, and the Founding Fathers deserve the awed tribute they have received over the centuries.
The first president I would like to address is also the first president of the United States, George Washington. President Washington was a senior officer during the French and Indian War. Another rank he held was as the commander-in-chief of the Colonial army during the Revolutionary War. He was chosen for this position by the Second Continental Congress. Under his command soldiers captured the cities of Saratoga in 1777 and Yorktown in 1781.
The national bank was a creation of Hamilton’s for the government to deposit funds (taxes), print U.S. currency, and regulate all state banks. Thomas Jefferson was a man who represented the Demcratic-Republicans. Some of his contributions consist of the Articles of Confederation , and the Notes on the State of Virginia . The Articles of Confederation established the national government in 1777 and was used to weaken the central government in order to strengthen the individual state powered governments. As the Notes on the State of Virginia was Jefferson stating how America would remain strong if they remained to their rural roots.
Washington led the revolutionary war which began the birth of a new nation which goes under foreign policy, helped with the constitution that had much to do with equal rights, and dealt with the whiskey rebellion. Also Washington set the standards for all of the other presidents which was very important. The 3rd best president based off my criteria is Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy built the Panama Canal, built up the navy,
John Locke is one of the most influential Enlightenment philosophers of the seventeenth century. His philosophical writings of individual rights and role of government to secure these rights were a major influence on the founding fathers of the United States of America. The founding fathers such as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison used many of the tenets of John Locke's philosophy to construct the American political ideology of liberal democracy. John Locke's view of what a civil society and popular sovereignty inspired the founding fathers and the colonists to develop a political and social discourse which fueled the American Revolution. Locke's influence can be seen in documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Federalist Papers.
George Washington was born in 1732 to a planter family rooted in Virginia. He was first appointed to military office at the age of twenty in 1752 as district adjutant general in the Virginia militia. He was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army by the Second Continental Congress in May of 1775. Although his troops were inexperience’s and ill-equipped, his perseverance, tenacity, and leadership qualities led his men to victory on many occasions. He led his troops arduous war that resulted in the establishment of the United States as a free nation.
The U.S. Constitution: Reform or Counter- Revolution Danielle Therrien Professor Telfare AP American History (Hour: 4th) February 8th, 2012 As a result of the bicentennial of the United States Constitution, Americans have found themselves inundated with books, articles, television specials, and other assorted productions on every aspect of that famous document. With rare expectations, this outpouring repeats and embellishes the standard myth about the Constitution’s adoption. After winning their independence form the British crown- this myth runs- the American people had slid into a critical period of economic depression, political turmoil, and international peril. The promising
Daniele Posch Voice of Democracy Speech November 4, 2012 APUSH The Relevance of the Constitution in Modern Society It was once stated by Henry Clay that, “The Constitution of the United States was made not merely for the generation that then existed, but for posterity- unlimited, undefined, endless, perpetual posterity.” The Constitution was created to govern America for eternity. People in America value the Constitution and believe in its legitimacy. Also, the Constitution frames our country until this day. No one would be able to create a better document for America. Our Constitution is still very relevant; considering, since the year of 1781, all still abide by this ratified document.
