Vanessa Gonzalez ENG 102 1162 Prof. Zaleski ESSAY 1A In the book, One World a Global Anthropology of Short Stories more than 21 authors bring together and share their short stories that speak the clarity and intensity of the human experience. Each having there own unique backgrounds but all showing the struggles of getting through everyday life. Despite the fact that the characters had to deal with different complications of their everyday lives they still had similar messages that they were trying to convey the readers. She left Manila leaving behind her laughter and husband in order to send money to her family. The family that Alina works for go by the name Mr. and Mrs. Kong. As we read the story we grow to find out that the Kong’s are a very dysfunctional family, there kids barely know that they exist and as for their marriage, it’s nothing but just two people sharing the same house. The Kong’s no longer have any romantic interest towards each other, Mrs. Kong found an interest in the young good looking medicine man and as for Mr. Kong he stays late at work in order to suppress the feelings he has grown to have for Alina. Alina is constantly watching herself making sure that she doesn’t get on Mrs. Kong’s bad side, which would be horrible because she could end up getting fired and after that she will get deported and then she will have nothing to offer her family. On top of that her daughter doesn’t recognize who she is and as for her husband who knows what he could be doing so far away. Later on in the story Mr. Kong also comes out with the truth and end up telling Alina how madly in love he is with her and of course although that is her boss she would not allow him to continue and try to kiss her, so she end up going to jail. The main conflict in the story is Lin trying to fit in, a young teenage high school girl who is just trying to be accepted but her mother is making it very difficult. Her mother is very proud of her culture and she will have no shame in it unlike Lin who likes to day that she’s from Philadelphia, but she only does this so everybody else can accept her. She is willing to go far to be accepted which is not a good thing, she meets this young boy named Matt he goes over her house for a study date and they almost end up having sex, she only went along with it because she felt like in a way she has to that in the end she would possibly be accepted. This story related to the theme of power struggle because it shows what people go through in everyday life that no matter what age or how big or small the problem is they are still dilemmas that they have to over pass. Although Lin being accepted isn’t the biggest problem in the world it is still something that she has to try to get through whether if its accepting who she is or just finally finding a way to fit
