When you type in “The Decision” on any popular search engine, the top results will most likely not be the Supreme Court’s most recent ruling on corporate spending limits or even the governments pending decision on gay rights legislation. Instead, they will be Lebron James’ decision to “take his talents to south beach and join the Miami Heat.” Obviously, a verdict as high-caliber and life-changing as the one Lebron James made can carry over to the next most import component of our generation; Nike. How has the popularity of “King” James’ “decision” impacted the way Nike targets consumers, and in what ways do they use this to their advantage? It is a two- page ad with Lebron James in the process of dunking a basketball with his right hand on the left page and text with a close up of a basketball shoe on the right page. The text, in white and all caps on the left portion of the page, reads vertically: “BE UNSTOPPABLE.” Right above this but in noticeably smaller font, the text reads: “LEBRON 8: LIGHTER, STRONGER, BIGGER EXPECTATIONS.” The Lebron 8 shoe takes up a majority of the remaining space on the page.
