Some of the ways by which they make themselves unique is the private and exclusive selection of fine foods that they offer. There are two main characteristics that prove this fact. First, Kudler is part of market that is dominated by a small number of firms that together control the majority of the market. There are few gourmet grocery stores in a market of major supermarkets such as Fry’s Food and Drug and Safeway and these larger chains dominate the smaller retailers such as Kudler. Secondly, as part of an oligopoly market structure the decisions that Kudler makes, in consideration to their selections and prices, are influenced and in response of the other market participants. An example of this would be grocery stores such as Fry’s and Safeway, sometimes you see that their prices are almost the same. On a particular week strawberries are on sale at Fry’s for 99 cents one week and then they are 99 cents at Safeway the next week. This is because they are interdependent on each other. They are always looking at what each other are selling and at what price. This makes grocery stores like Kudler inelastic. This can only work for so long because in a struggling economy, consumers will lower their fine food standards to match their financial situations. A competitive strategy that Kudler Fine Foods may consider is an offensive strategy. This type of strategic approach will push Kudler to overcome their barriers by changing thy systemic relationships creating them. For example, Kudler prides themselves in the gourmet experience and rare quality of fine foods. However, in order to compete with the larger stores they may need to carry a more generic and basic form of groceries. The gourmet experience may have to be reduced to maximize profit – or Kudler could broaden their inventory to appeal to more people. One real-world organization that successfully offers fine foods and appeals to a broad market is AJ’s Fine Foods located exclusively in Arizona. This fine-food market offers an elite selection of foods ranging from dairy items to floral arrangements to baked goods. Additionally, AJ’s provides several lunch options on their patio at reasonable price as well as catering for events or parties.
