Anyone can be a hero to someone else. Every single person has at least one admirable quality about themselves. One thing that makes the stand out from everyone else. Not all heroes have a cape and spandex, but they usually have a big heart. For one student in The Freedom Writers Diaries, their hero was Meip Gies. Many know her from The Diary of Anne Frank as the woman who helped Anne and her family hide. This particular student was in absolute awe at her bravery, and finally got the chance to tell her so when Meip personally came and spoke to the whole class. She was very humble about being told this, but turned around and said to the class: she was no hero. In fact, they were the heroes with everything they had done to change their lives, and the lives of those around them. The students really took this to heart, and realized that to the ones who look up to them, they all were true heroes in their own way. Another student said John Tu was his hero. This man gave so much to this class: he donated computers, contributed to their fundraisers, and even gave a few of them jobs. There was quite a bit of respect for this one, very generous man. The jobs he gave students were incredible for them; he worked around their schedules and included all benefits and even Christmas bonuses. Not many kids in high school get an opportunity like that, and for some of them it was an absolute blessing. One thing about John Tu was everything he did was out of the goodness of his own heart, he didn't have to do anything he did, but he chose to. Maybe to others this isn't very heroic, but to this particular student, John Tu changed his life. As a whole, the class idolized Ms. Gruwell. She was everyone's hero, and she deserved it. At the beginning of her students freshman year, she was told they were all "unteachable." Being the person she is, she set out to prove everyone wrong.
