Occupational Therapy is a valuable health care service and is valued as such by the Hospital administration of Leigh High Valley Hospital. Unfortunately, the employees of the OT department have bad attitudes and are hard to deal with. Thinking that they are better than everyone else, the OT department does not adhere to the organizational culture. The fundamentals of the business discipline are not being followed and profitability is at stake. To get this department in shape within six months without hiring a whole new staff is challenging; these employees need to be motivated! Following the motivational tactics learned in Gung Ho!; the spirit of the squirrel, the way of the beaver, and the gift of the goose, is a surefire way to bring positive energy to the department and motivate each employee. Everyone deserves a worthwhile work environment, to feel like they are in control of achieving the goal, and to be cheered on by coworkers and employers. The Spirit of the Squirrel The Spirit of the Squirrel teaches the lesson of worthwhile, important work by sharing goals and values. Everyone has to work as a team toward well understood and shared goals. How the team reaches the goals is critically important, we must be guided by values. The goals are what the people work towards and values strengthen the effort. Management has more control over values and upholding them. Having values encourages the team to achieve goals while doing it the right way; they prevent getting to goals by cheating. The whole team needs to be involved in committing to goals. Values are a guideline to expected behavior. The OT department at the Hospital needs to see management set higher standards for expected behavior. Values put in place will be to follow the fundamentals of the occupational therapy discipline. By making the staff recognize that we are in the health care industry
