Biologically and agriculturally, fruit is a seed-bearing structure of flowering plant. Fruit Types: Fruits may be classified majorly into two; (i) Fleshy fruits; such as apple, banana, cashew etc (ii) Dry fruits; such as date, acorn, chest nut etc Some fruits are termed vegetables because of their physiological and anatomical components. Examples of such fruit include: • Tomatoes • Eggplants • Carrot etc. Over 475 million tons of fruits are produced each year. China, Indian, Brazil and USA are the top producers. Fruits are of different sizes, shape and colours. Nutritional Importance and of Fruits • Fruits are low in calories and high in nutrients. • Fruits are good protein sources. • Fruits contain many important vitamins and minerals. • Fruits contain complex carbohydrates needed for balanced diet. • Fruits are excellent sources of the fiber needed for a healthy digestive system. • Fruits are essential in the diet to prevent diseases such as scurvy, beriberi, pellagra, night blindness etc. • Fruits contain materials that can supports and boost the immune system. • Fruits help bones grow and keep skin healthy.
