Developing Good Study Habits

Tim Cobb 13 Nov 2012 PSYC1101, Tuesday Nights 5:30PM – 7:00PM Developing Good Study Habits I chose developing good study habits as my self-help paper because I have been out of school for over twenty years, with the exception of taking some college courses back in 2007 when I was attempting to get my associates degree in Business Management. All through my scholastic career, at least up until I enrolled in the RN program and struggled with this past summer semester, I had the good (or bad, depending on how you look at it) fortune of having very good reading comprehension and retention skills and did not have to develop good study habits. However, now that I’m forty-one and going back to school to change careers, I have discovered that things have changed drastically and that if I do not come up with a way to develop good study habits, I will not complete my schooling and will be stuck in a dead-end job for the rest of my working life. In my quest to develop good study habits, I picked up How to Develop Good Study Habits by T.G. Dawood. In her book, the author gives several ways to improve study habits. It gives ways and ideas on how to effectively take tests, how to improve long term memory and recall, listening skills, learning styles, learning processes, overcoming failure, self-esteem, decision making skills, dealing with stress, and how to deal with negative criticism. Not only do these things help in developing your study habits, they will also help in work and everyday life. I have a tendency to only half read the question and then I pick the wrong answer simply because I did not read the whole question until I completely understood it.
